Port Norfolk an Historic Victorian Community in Portsmouth, Va
Port Norfolk an Historic Victorian Community in Portsmouth, Va

SPSA is offering Port Norfolk the opportunity to re-establish a full-service recycling program in our community.

Recycling is a major part of the effort to protect the environment in Hampton Roads. Communities who understand the value in being good citizens are well aware of the vital role an easy recycling program plays in the effort of conservation. The loss of curb side recycling put Portsmouth at a competitive disadvantage in this effort among the other cities of Hampton Roads who offer comprehensive curb-side recycling programs.

In order to help Portsmouth neighborhoods overcome this obstacle, the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA), is making it possible for Portsmouth communities to institute their own curbside collection programs.

By instituting a recycling program Port Norfolk residents can create an easy, reliable method to make a positive environmental impact. Additionally it will set Port Norfolk apart from other areas which lack a comprehensive recycling program, making it a more desirable place to call home!

What are the benefits to establishing a recycling program?

What materials are accepted?

SPSA collects recyclable items in two streams. Paper (newspaper, office paper etc) is separated in clear or brown paper bags. Then all other recyclables are places in a a large co-mingled container.

The following items are currently collected and recycled:

What is the cost?

Full-service recycling is only $10 per rolling container per month. Rolling containers come in both 95 and 65 gallon sizes. Additionally personal, small blue bins are provided at no charge. If you don't think you have enough materials to recycle on your own, consider splitting service with a neighbor! Billing is done quarterly to individual participating homes.

How do I get the service?

Contact Jon Berry at 397-7221 to pick up an application. We are seeking an initial 50 families to establish the program.
